FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Studies have proven that the chiropractic adjustment triggers the release of natural painkillers called endorphins and that swelling, inflammation and pain can reduce significantly after an adjustment is performed. This is precisely what the chiropractor intends to accomplish when he directs a specific force to restore normal ranges of motion to a joint which is being restricted by muscles or fibrous adhesions. Abnormal nerve signals caused by the restriction, which create interference with normal function, can then be eliminated. Once normal function is restored, other body systems, which have been compensating for the problem, can then begin to return to normal. The Doctors are proficient in number of techniques including: Gonstead, Diversified, Activator, Kinesiology, Sacral Occipital Technique, and Thompson Drop Technique.

Chiropractic is a healing art that recognizes the nervous system as the primary determining factor of a person’s health. The human nervous system regulates all life-sustaining functions such as movement, blood circulation, digestion, breathing, and immunity from disease. The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, which resides inside the spine. Nerves branch out from the spinal cord, exit from between the bones of the spine (vertebrae), and divide numerous times until every cell in the body is reached. Nerves are like electrical wires that run through our body, and the brain is like a “generator” sending electrical impulses through these nerves to every single cell, telling them what to do. Thanks to this miraculous system, living in good health is possible-our digestive system automatically converts our meals into living tissue; our lungs automatically take in and extract oxygen from air; cuts and wounds automatically heal; and invading germs are automatically attacked and destroyed. Whenever the nervous system is functioning properly, optimum health is possible.

The spine, although designed to protect the spinal cord and its delicate nerves, very often does the opposite. In the course of living, we encounter minor and major trauma to the spine, such as the birthing (delivery) process, slips and falls, sport-related injuries, car accidents (whiplash), repetitive or cumulative trauma associated with work (typing, lifting) or a hobby (tennis, crocheting, etc.), poor posture, and obesity. Over time, these events can cause the spine to change shape or misalign and irritate the nerves within. This results in body dysfunction and ill-health. Symptoms of spinal misalignment can include pain, numbness and tingling in the spine or limbs. Chronic headaches, frequent colds and the feeling of fatigue and stress are also symptoms.

Chiropractic is the art and science of detecting spinal misalignments, called subluxations, and correcting them naturally and painlessly, without the use of drugs or surgery. When spinal irritation to the nerves is reduced, nerve function is restored, and the body typically returns to a more optimal state, resulting in improved health.

Chiropractors use the spinal adjustment as the main method of spinal correction. A spinal adjustment is a precise, manually delivered, gentle force into a stuck or misaligned joint. Adjustments improve range-of-motion (flexibility) and can result in a sensation of well-being due to improved nerve and vascular (circulatory) function.

Chiropractic is not a “belief” system. It has been helping people suffering from pain since 1895 and has endured countless scientific studies that have proven many of the theories and techniques to be true. Misinformation is rampant and in most cases, there is real proof to dispel the non believers.

“There is an overwhelming body of evidence indicating that Chiropractic management of low back pain is more cost-effective than medical management. Chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low back pain. Chiropractic management is greatly superior to medical management in terms of scientific validity, safety, cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction.” Pran Manga, PhD. The Effectiveness And Cost Effectiveness Of Chiropractic Management Of Low Back Pain. University Of Ottowa, 1993.

“There are more than 30 randomized controlled clinical trials studying the effectiveness of spinal manipulation in the relief of spinal pain, the majority of which have looked at acute low back pain. Manipulation has been compared to most non-surgical treatment modalities including placebo, ultrasound, traction, exercise, bed rest, analgesics and corsets. The meta-analyses performed by Anderson et al led to the conclusion that the average patient receiving spinal manipulation is better off than 54 to 85% of the patients receiving the comparison treatment.” Dr. Scott Halderman, M.D D.C PhD FRCP (C), Department of Neurology, University of California, Irvine. Presented at the Alternative And Complementary Medicine And The Orthopedic Surgeon, February, 28, 2001.

There is much more proof, but, I think you get the picture.

This one’s easy. Chiropractic care should not hurt! Our techniques are extremely gentle and most patients say they either felt only gentle pressure or almost nothing at all. The only time there is any discomfort is when you are in such severe pain, you cannot even move or be touched. In many cases, the treatment you receive at Windmill Health Center should immediately relieve the pain and you will feel the results immediately.

If you have been to another Chiropractor and it was painful, they probably either used the wrong technique or may not have been proficient in their chosen technique. Most people know that Chiropractic care has been proven to work wonders with back and neck pain, but what most people are not aware of is the fact that are over 300 techniques a Chiropractor may use.

What this means is that you can walk into two different Chiropractor’s offices and get two very different treatments with two very different results! What this also means is that if you give one Chiropractor a try, and you do not receive the desired results, don’t give up on Chiropractic care. Stay with it and visit another doctor. You just may see the results you are looking for.

No you don’t. That’s one of the biggest myths about Chiropractic care. After your complete evaluation, you will be given the best possible treatment plan to get you out of pain as quickly as possible. If a previous Chiropractor told you that you had to keep coming forever, they were probably not the right choice for you.
When you come in for an initial evaluation, we’ll be able to tell if you will be able to benefit from one of our programs. We are confident that we’ve put together one of the most effective systems to address back and neck pain and this system can very quickly relieve many if not all of your symptoms. No matter how long you’ve been suffering, an effective Chiropractic care plan will achieve tremendous results. We even work with patients that have had extensive surgery and still received no major relieve from pain. In fact, in some cases the surgery made the pain worse, usually because the real problem was never addressed. No matter how old or helpless you THINK your case is, our Weston chiropractors have proven time and time again that Chiropractic care is the proven method to relieve your chronic pain.

Your pain will usually not go away all by itself. In most cases, back pain does not simply just go away. You may feel better from one day to the next, but research shows that 75% of back pain sufferers will still suffer with either pain or disability 12 months or longer after consulting a doctor without any treatment. And the worst thing is that when you ignore your pain, thinking it will get better all by itself – you run the risk of it getting worse.

Let’s be crystal clear on this issue. A little back and neck pain in most cases will not heal on its own. Like a toothache – they rear their ugly head again and again. And like that toothache, when they come back, it’s usually much worse. But the BIG difference between a toothache and backache is that when your teeth get bad, your dentist can give you a root canal or even extract or replace your teeth. That is simply not an option for your back and neck pain. There is no root canal, no replacement spine. There are people everywhere who are in constant pain that said to themselves 20 years ago, “it will just get better all by itself.” It does not and they continue to suffer today.

You have every right to consider the options when your insurance does not offer Chiropractic coverage or if our office does not take your current HMO. Keep in mind that insurance companies are businesses that are run for profit and their number one priority is to make money. In many cases, and to the detriment of its members, this can sometimes conflict with the best possible healthcare for you and your family.

If we are not on your HMO list, it is usually because we have chosen not to be. We have chosen to treat our patients the best way we know how and that is with the patient’s best interest in mind, not the way an insurance adjuster tells me to.

The bottom line on Chiropractic Care is that you get what you pay for and when it comes to your health and well-being, there is no price you can put on being and feeling healthy.
